According to him, the explanation and the mystery may boil down to a book which the character Sawyer read in season one. The title is watership down written by Richard Adams. It is a psychological test based on rabbits where they are placed on an island with food and shelter being provided by farmers. The catch is that the rabbits know they are being pampered by the farmers so that they can be killed for their meat. However it explores the possibility that some rabbits are relunctant to escape and fend for themsevles. That was roughly what happen in season one when Sayid opposed moving into the jungle on Jack's idea. Sounds pretty interesting, shall search for the book this weekend.
